SAY, TELL y ASK

Cuándo usar SAY, cuándo usar TELL y cuándo usar ASK

¿Cúal es la diferencia entre SAY y TELL? ¿Se dice "say a joke" o "tell a joke"? ¿Cuándo se usa ASK? Estos dos verbos confunden bastante, la siguiente imagen explica muy bien la diferencia entre estos tres verbos en inglés:
